FishAbility

FishAbility by Fishcare Victoria, in partnership with Reclink Australia, is increasing the involvement of people with disabilities into recreational fishing through coordinated and regular volunteer supported fishing events.

Fishing is one of the most popular recreational activities in Australia. So many of us are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to get outdoors and wet a line at the drop of a hat. However, there are a number of barriers that stop people with disabilities from being able to do the same.

After many years of conducting informal all-ability fishing clinics, Fishcare Victoria and Reclink Australia received funding from Victorian recreational licence fees to run an all-abilities program.

The program advocates and promotes inclusive participation for one of Australia’s most popular recreational activities. It provides a sense of community to those who may be socially isolated because of their disability as well as provides the equipment and support to get outdoors and give recreational fishing a go.

The FishAbility program aims to:

  • increase the active involvement of people with disabilities into recreational fishing through coordinated and regular fishing events
  • partner with government, agencies, local councils and organisations and develop strategic cooperative arrangements
  • promote responsible fishing practices as well as rules and regulations to participants and caregivers
  • be advocates in promoting inclusive participation in recreational fishing
  • be a key delivery partner in the State Government – Fishing for All initiative

The program is delivered by Fishcare Victoria in partnership with Reclink Australia and is funded through Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence fees.
