Improvement Works at Rye Pier

Reeling in squid off Rye pier is about to get even better as Parks Victoria recently commenced works to improve safety and accessibility at the pier.

The pier was originally built in 1860, before being completely reconstructed in 1993-94. Although the pier was still in use, it was nearing the end of its design life and may have posed a risk to public safety as it was presenting signs of structural failure.

The upgrades will be welcome news to locals and visitors to the Mornington Peninsula. The works to upgrade the pier will include the reconstruction and widening of a 270-metre section of pier, instalment of a new all-abilities access ramp, safety railings, and upgraded solar lighting.

The project will be focused on protecting the marine environment to ensure there are no long-term effects on the environment. Not only is the pier popular for fishing, but it is also a very popular area for snorkelling and diving.

Parks Victoria have advised that the pier will be closed for approximately six months during construction and works are expected to be completed by mid-2022.

More information on the Rye Pier upgrade can be found on the Parks Victoria website here.

The project has been funded through the Victorian Government’s $24 million Piers and Jetties Economic Stimulus Package. Other projects funded under the package include upgrades to several piers in Port Phillip, including Queenscliff South Pier, Portarlington Pier and Middle Brighton Pier.
