Algal Bloom at Lake Wellington

CURRENT ADVICE AS AT 21/02/2022

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) are currently monitoring an active algal bloom at Marlay Point, Lake Wellington. The bloom is isolated to this location. The bloom has been identified as Microcystis, a type of toxic Blue Green Algae.

DELWP have the following community advisory in place:

  • People and pets should avoid contact with affected water, particularly where floating scums, discoloured water or clumps of algae are evident.
  • If you come into contact with the water rinse immediately with fresh water and seek medical advice if concerned.
  • The advice is to not eat seafood caught from Marlay Point, Lake Wellington.
  • Microcystis aeruginosa can produce a microcystins toxin which and may have harmful effects on the liver.
  • Warning signage has been put in place at Marlay Point to inform the community.
