Mako Shark Fishing Ban to be Lifted

Parks Victoria Releases Devilbend Management Plan

The Victorian Recreational Fishing Peak Body, VRFish is pleased with the release by
Parks Victoria of the Devilbend Natural Features Reserve, management plan. The
management plan creates Victoria's newest and second largest protected area on
the Mornington Peninsula. Encompassing an area of 1005 hectares and "almost 250
hectares of water surface area", the plan enables the development of a sustainable
recreational fishery and the largest inland fishery on the Mornington Peninsula.

Victorian Recreational Fishers Welcome A Mako Amendment

Economic Study of Recreational Fishing in Victoria - Headline Results

Ernst and Young have performed economic research in order to determine the net benefit and economic contribution of recreational fishers to Victoria. The key outcomes required for this study were qualitative and quantitative answers to the following questions:

  • What are the characteristics and level of recreational fishing participants in Victoria?
  • What is the net benefit of recreational fishing on the Victorian Economy? and
  • What is the contribution of recreational fishing and activities associated with fishing to the Victorian state economy?

The results of this research reflect the value of recreational fishing completed in Victoria by Victorians.

Draft Native Fish Policy released for public comment

DATE: 22nd May 2009
VRFish established an Inland Fishery Policy in March 2004, which included elements for the management of trout, native fish and environmental flows. The prime objective of this Policy was to provide a framework for the continued management of our recreational inland fishery. VRFish identified that it would like to see the Policy initiatives included in Fisheries Victoria strategies for the recreational inland fishery.

Port Phillip finally gets some Balls

Big bucks for boat-based fishers

The Brumby Government has delivered its 2009 State Budget for Victoria, with $4 million for Parks Victoria to 'further improve the facilities around Port Phillip Bay and Western Port, including upgrades to jetties and boat launching facilities, as well as development of precinct plans for many important harbours to make water based activities, including boating and fishing, more accessible.'

Eildon Fishing Pontoon Project Launch

The Victorian Recreational Fishing Peak Body is pleased to announce the completion and opening to the public of a recreational fishing pontoon on the Eildon Pondage. Located on the South Eastern side of the Eildon Pondage, this floating platform will provide both a recreational fishing drawcard for the township of Eildon and an access point to the highly productive pondage waters for recreational fishers of all abilities.

Boaters to get access back to Lake Purrumbete

February 6th, 2009

VRFish is relieved to hear that Parks Victoria will be commencing construction of a temporary boat ramp at the iconic Lake Purrumbete. Boat access to Lake Purrumbete has been limited over the years due to ongoing drought conditions. In October 2008, Parks Victoria received a grant to install a new boat ramp to cater for low water levels.

Its raining Bass in the Snowy

100,000 Australian Bass, bred from Snowy River brood stock, will be released into the Snowy River today. This is a fantastic initiative from the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority who purchased these additional Australian Bass from the New South Wales breeding program.
